What is Asbestos Mesothelioma?

Asbestos mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos on the job or due to secondary exposure. The connection between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure is well documented. While mesothelioma is relatively rare—with approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases in the United States annually—this form of cancer is aggressive and a cure does not yet exist.

Asbestos mesothelioma cancer affects men four times more often than women, primarily because asbestos exposure occurs in traditionally male-dominant occupations. While many mesothelioma patients do not survive more than 12 months past their diagnosis, mesothelioma prognosis depends on how early the mesothelioma cancer is diagnosed, and how it is treated.
